The SR500 is, bang-for-buck wise, our favorite home coffee roaster and the one that we tend to recommend for most users.
The SR500 is built on the same chassis as the SR300, but it has the added features of a rheostat to control the fan speed and three temperature settings. These additions give the user the ability to control the way that the heat is applied to the coffee beans. At a minimum this allows the user to compensate for changes in ambient temperature while not over complicating the roasting process. The added control will also allow the user to easily bridge the gap between beginner and more the advanced roasting styles and techniques.
In short the added control makes the SR500 a more usable and practical coffee roaster that beginners and advanced home coffee roasters will appreciate. Features included with the SR500 include;
Chaff Collector: The chaff collector on the SR500 is a two piece “clam-shell” system that sits directly on top of the roasting chamber. The hot air passing through the coffee beans removes the chaff and deposits it in the collector for removal after the roast process has completed.
Cooling Fan: The user can engage the cooling cycle at any point during the roasting process, the cooling cycle will also engage automatically once the timer reaches zero. When the cooling fan is engaged, the heating element is turned off and the fan will continue to run for 3 minutes. After 3 minutes the fan will automatically turn off.
Countdown Timer: The Fresh Roast SR500 comes with an LCD countdown timer that can be adjusted +/- at any time during the roast. The main function of the timer is as a failsafe, when it hits “0”, the roaster automatically goes into the cool down cycle. The timer can also act as a guideline to monitor your roast, which will help you maintain consistency and can help you trouble shoot your roasting, should you need to.
Temperature Control: Three temperature settings help the user to gain control over the roasting process and dictate how the heat is applied to the beans.
Fan Control: A rheostat dial allows the user to adjust the fan speed (+/- 10%), which in conjunction with the 3 temperature settings, increases the amount of control the user has over the roasting process.
